When an Amish child turns sixteen, they get a chance to try out everything that the Amish society prohibits. Technology, alcohol, drugs, everything is allowed. This is called ‘rumspringa’, a ritual wherein the Amish teenagers must decide if the temptations of the modern world are stronger than their bond with their community.
Once they’ve decided that they’ve partied enough, they are recognized as adult members of the society. If they choose the outside world, they will be banned. Any contact with the friends and family they leave behind is prohibited.
